Honoring Veterans & Supporting Their Mental Health
Greater Mental Health’s mission is to transform lives and strengthen communities through direct care, education, and advocacy. More than half of our services take place in homes, schools, and other community spaces. By meeting people where they are, we build healthier, safer, and more connected communities. Mobile services are a core part of how we reach vulnerable people and connect them to the services and supports they need. Our mobile teams work with the children, youth, families, and adults across Westchester and Rockland counties.
“Mobile work gives us the opportunity to see the conditions clients are living in and to get a sense of their individual struggles so we can advocate on their behalf. It also gives us a chance to get out of the office into our local community to find resources like libraries and community centers.”
Mobile work offers numerous advantages that help reduce barriers to treatment. By meeting our clients in their homes, schools, or community spaces, we can help them navigate barriers such as challenges with childcare, transportation, or limited mobility. It allows for flexible outreach and engagement, enabling staff to meet clients where they are—literally and emotionally, which helps clients feel comfortable more quickly. The ability to walk outside with clients in a less clinical setting, or by meeting in their home, can give valuable insight into their wellbeing and family dynamics. Like clinic staff, mobile staff are also well-positioned to quickly conduct assessments during crises or when symptoms escalate.
“Mobile therapy is distinctly different from any other form of treatment I am familiar with, and I firmly believe in this type of work. By meeting clients in their natural environments, we gain access to them that other clinicians might not have. Many barriers are broken down when someone is in a space where they feel comfortable and secure. I also consider it an incredible privilege to be invited into my clients’ lives. Immersing myself in their culture and observing how they navigate their environments has been a wonderful experience. Initially intimidated by this aspect of the job, I quickly grew to love it.”
For staff, mobile work also fosters a deeper connection to the community, and clients are often especially appreciative of in-person visits.
“I love being a mobile Peer Support Specialist and serving as a role model for people in recovery in the community. By sharing my personal knowledge of what it’s like to live and thrive with mental health conditions and substance use disorders, I gain a profound sense of purpose and meaning for my life. When connecting with those on a similar journey, I love providing hope, inspiration, and participating in the power of community-based recovery.”
