Turn Awareness into Action: Celebrating Mental Health Month
While one in five people experience a diagnosable mental health condition each year, taking care of one’s mental health is a priority for all.
Pride Month, celebrated each June, is a time to recognize the strength, diversity, and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is also a time to bring attention to the barriers that this community faces when seeking affirming mental health care, such as stigma and discrimination. Pride is more than just visibility and advocacy—it’s about creating inclusive, supportive spaces where all identities are honored and mental well-being is valued. At Greater Mental Health, we are committed to culturally competent care and stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ individuals every day of the year.
Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and for LGBTQIA+ individuals, it can be especially vital to actively tend to mental health. Many in the LGBTQIA+ community face challenges while finding access to affirming care, and this can contribute to higher rates of mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Safe spaces, supportive communities, and inclusive mental health resources help everyone feel seen, heard, and validated. Affirming therapy, peer support groups, and Pride-related activities all foster resilience and self-acceptance.
Below, you’ll find events in Rockland and Westchester counties that celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, along with resources such as peer groups at the Rockland Pride Center in Nyack, NY.
